What the checker tests
- Exactly one face, looking straight at the camera
- Eyes open, mouth closed, neutral expression
- Even light on the face and a sharp image
- Plain, light background without shadows
- Head height inside the allowed range for the document
- Pixel size and file size for the digital upload
It cannot see everything: it does not judge whether the photo is recent, edited or a true likeness. Read the full requirements for the rules a machine cannot check.

Frequently asked questions
Is the passport photo checker really free?
Yes. The checker is free with no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded to our servers.
What does the checker look at?
It finds your face and checks that only one person is in the photo, that you look straight at the camera with eyes open and a neutral expression, that the light is even, that the photo is sharp, that the background is plain and light, and that the head size and file match the U.S. passport specification.
Does passing the checker guarantee my photo will be accepted?
No automated check can guarantee acceptance, because the final decision is made by the State Department. The checker catches the most common reasons for rejection so you can fix them before you submit.
My photo is not cropped yet. Can I still check it?
Yes. Upload the full photo and the checker tests your face, expression, light and background. It also shows how the photo would look cropped to 2 × 2 inches. To get a correctly cropped file, use the button under the result.
